Spectra Energy strictly adheres to pipeline safety laws and we address threats and integrity issues quickly and efficiently.
Pipeline Safety Regulations underwent significant changes as a result of the “Pipeline Safety Improvement Act of 2002.” This law required more stringent pipeline regulations and more communication with businesses and residents in certain areas along pipeline facilities.
These areas—known as High Consequence Areas—can generally be described as:
- Areas that meet certain criteria of population density
- Areas that contain populations of impaired mobility; i. e. schools and hospitals
- Areas where people congregate such as ball fields and parks
The pipeline safety regulations require natural gas pipeline operators to have Integrity Management Programs to apply in these High Consequence Areas. These programs identify methods for addressing threats and maintaining the structural soundness (integrity) of the pipelines.

Mapping/Geographic Information System
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer database capable of organizing and relating information according to its geographic location. The Spectra Energy GIS provides up-to-date and accurate pipeline information throughout our pipeline system, combining specific pipe statistics (such as size, coating, construction and testing information) and pipeline routes with topographical, weather and other data on the communities located along the pipelines. Using a GIS enables Spectra Energy to better understand—and even predict—the factors that affect the pipelines in communities like yours.
Pipeline rights of way are marked with signs showing the pipeline’s approximate location, commodity transported, name of the pipeline company and a telephone number where company representatives can be reached. For security reasons, detailed maps of the pipeline are not publicly available. Local Spectra Energy representatives will be happy to show you where our pipeline is located in your area.
